#day216 – former richest city in the world

Potosi was supposedly the richest city in the world once. There was a time when there had been more than 700 silver mines in the city. Nowadays there are still 180 mines, but the more important thing is the tourism today.

In case you aren’t claustrophobic you can visit the mines and have a look how miners work today. That’s what we want to do and so we left our beloved Sucre today to travel to the nearby town Potosi.

Besides being the former richest city in the world Potosi is the highest city in the world as well. Supposedly. The city is a bit more than 4000 meters above sea level. I haven’t heard of it before at home and so I googled ‘highest city in the world’ but it’s actually hard to figure out which city it is in reality.

No matter if the title is true or not, the altitude makes it a tough place to visit. Every tiny little hill makes you breathless and force you to have a break. Having headache, feeling dizzy or sleepless nights are pretty common results of the altitude.

Fortunately I’m feeling quite alright. I actually have to. I want to visit one of the mines tomorrow. It sounds like a really special thing to do and I definitely don’t want to miss it.
